COMMUNITY Meeting ~ City of Maitland

Learn About Your Local Community News As It's Happening ! ! !

TONIGHT...at 7:00PM in our City Hall Council Chambers...there will be a presentation regarding the feasibility of a pedestrian overpass spanning Orlando Ave./17-92 in order to connect Lake Lily Park with Fort Maitland Park.

Mr. Jere Pile, one of our active community residents, and Mr. James Beverly of Reynolds, Smith and Hills, Inc., a transportation engineering consulting firm that has a history of providing public infrastructure engineering and master planning services to local governmental and quasi-governmental agencies, will be making the presentation.

This is yet another opportunity for YOU to begin your journey of becoming involved with your community.

I'll be at this meeting first and then walk over to join the MPN meeting in progress.

Come join me for BOTH meetings !

Unfortunately I didn't open my email until today to learn about the meeting about the proposed pedestrian overpass near Lake Lily. Personally I think it's a great idea for safety in crossing 1792 for the many condo and other residents wishing to walk around Lake Lily or to cross 1792 to go to the restaurants and shopping. I drive anytime I wish to go across the street because it's dangerous to cross on foot
Thanks.

Meeting Follow-up

Here are some of my notes from the workshop meeting:

Reynolds, Smith and Hill, Inc. (RS&H) presented information covering various local pedestrian overpasses they've completed (Cady Way, Apopka/441, Chain-of-Lakes Winter Haven), the varying costs for each completed project, several funding options (Private-Public Partnerships, Federal Discretionary Funds, FDOT Enhancement Fund, Bonding through our CRA) and provided a slide photo with a mock-up bridge superimposed on the 17-92 Lake Lily/Fort Maitland Park location.

The advisory board was concerned about what the costs would be for such an endeavor and what percent of any "park space" might be encroached upon to complete this type of project.

RS&H suggested the cost might be somewhere between $3-5.4 Million - depending upon the style of architecture chosen - but said only a feasibility study, costing approx. $70K, would give our city a clear and more precise understanding of an actual price for the walk-over bridge.

Glenn Jafee publicly thanked Jere Pile for his participation and involvement towards bringing this proposed project before the city and the P&R Board agreed to discuss this further in their meeting that directly followed the workshop.

I was not able to stay for the regular P&R meeting because I wanted attend the Maitland Progress Now (MP-Now) that was already in progress.

If anyone DID attend OR has listened to the minutes...please share your information here !

I would not be in favor of a pedestrian crossover bridge. Seldom have I ever seen them used in other municipalities and no doubt the cost would be more than is being estimated. Wht not just wait for the light to turn red and use the crosswalk?

I'm not sure I understand what the purpose of this bridge would be...

Dear Anonymous,

I will keep you posted with any additional information I receive.

From what I understand, the concept has only been presented to our city for consideration.

It seems to me that there may be concern about moving people *safely* across 17-92/Orlando Avenue - especially so during the weekdays and working hours.

I am unsure as to the number of Maitland residents living in the condo's and townhomes on the east side of 17-92/Orlando Ave., but once The Village of Lake Lily's retail & restaurants are open...then pedistrian traffic may well increase ~ hence a possible need for a ped bridge.

I do not have a position as to whether I'm for it or against it because I'm still in what I refer to as "the discovery period".

How much would it cost ? Who will pay for it ? Would it be built before or after other east side retail projects are completed ? How great of a need is it ?

Those are just some simple questions we would need answers to before ever approving or rejecting such a project.

I encourage you to write to our city officials with your questions and then share the results on this Website.

Thanks for writing and, like I said, I'll continue updating this post with any new information I find or is shared with me.

Your Neighbor, Ann Lanier

ps~

FYI...Chuck Jordan, our city Leisure Services Director, would be a great contact for presenting your questions to ~
